Belleville, IL
Members Only Chapter Meeting Home/Private Garden Tour
This West Belleville garden began in Spring 2020 with an overarching goal to replace as much of the boring, monoculture lawn as possible on the 1 acre city lot and to invite the magic of natives to transform the area. Five years later--more than half of the front yard is a vibrant ever-changing sea of natives that surround a kitchen potager garden. Highlights on the property include two prairie slopes, developing woodland area, Elderberry shelterbelt, a developing "Stumpery", developing shoreline species area. AND the largest "found" stand of pussytoes on a mini remnant hill prairie area. All organic material is left on site--you will see odd experiments with layering materials, brush piles, lucky triumphs and sad failures of ailing species in the wrong places. You will get an up close look at the ongoing war against invasives: wisteria, ivy, honeysuckle, wintercreeper. Come gather at 5:45, explore the property, join guided tour at 6:15 and an elderberry product tasting to be held at 7:30 p.m. Members will receive an email on September 7th with the location of the Garden.
