How Flowers Made Our World by David George Haskell

This book is essentially a new way of looking at flowers—not as pretty decorations, but as powerful forces that helped create the world we live in. Haskell explains how flowering plants, which appeared relatively late in Earth's history, transformed ecosystems by developing relationships with insects, birds, animals, fungi, and eventually humans. Their adaptability and ability to cooperate helped create prairies, forests, grasslands, and even underwater ecosystems, while flowering plants also made possible much of our food and agriculture. Through examples such as magnolias, orchids, grasses, roses, and seagrasses, Haskell combines science, natural history, and beautiful storytelling to make the case that flowers have shaped both the natural world and human civilization—and that their resilience and creativity may offer lessons for our environmental future.
